However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (83’)

Djenepo is bruised and battered but will carry on. He’s done well today.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (82’)

Concern for Southampton as Djenepo, in the thick of things today, is fouled by Jorginho and goes down clutching his right arm. The physios are on.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (80’)

Djenepo beats Alonso with a clever turn and is then dragged to ground by the Chelsea wing-back. Anthony Taylor brandishes a yellow card.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (78’)

Close! Ziyech almost makes an immediate impact, looking to latch onto an inviting cross from Mount. Betrand does just enough to get there first, though a deflection off the Southampton man flies just wide. From the corner, Azpilicueta is offside as the ball drops to him a few yards out from goal.

Southampton send on Tella for goal scorer Minamino.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (76’)

James barrels down the right flank and squares for Werner, who tries to flick the ball into the path of a teammate. It doesn’t quite come off.

Chelsea make a double change: Hudson-Odoi, who came on at half-time, is now replaced by Ziyech. And Jorginho is on for Kovacic.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (74’)

Half a chance again for Chelsea. Hudson-Odoi is played in down the right, gets to the byline but sends his cut back straight at Salisu. The Chelsea youngster is clearly frustrated with himself.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (73’)

Good save! Hudson-Odoi is played in behind and cuts the ball back to Mount, in space on the edge of the box. He curls a shot towards the far corner, but McCarthy flies to his right and tips the ball wide. The flag is up for offside, though, so it wouldn’t have counted.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (71’)

Poor from Kovacic, who plays a wayward pass back towards Rudiger and gives away a corner. And Southampton almost take advantage. The set piece is just about dealt with but the ball is sent back into the box, where Vestergaard sends a looping header against the crossbar. The rebound drops to Ings, who can only guide a left-footed shot wide. A let off for Kovacic and Chelsea.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 CHELSEA (70’)

Minamino plays Betrand in on the left and the full-back’s cross is headed behind by Zouma. From the corner, Mendy easily claims Ward-Prowse’s delivery.
