Lippes, a collector by nature, hand-selected the floral enamel glass, opaline vases, and sterling silver boxes that dot the shelves in a nook by the entrance—any one of them would make a keepsake gift. A recently launched jewelry collection of semiprecious stone cuffs, enamel pillbox pendants, and hand-painted trillium flower earrings is displayed near the dressing room. And on a grand marble-top table that is the shop’s centerpiece are Mark Cross bags; Lippes’s friend Francisco Costa’s Costa Brazil candle, body oil, and cream; the linens and fine china Lippes produces with OKA; and picture books. Soon the shoes he makes with Manolo Blahnik will join the party.
On the racks themselves, Lippes’s new resort collection hangs alongside brand classics like zibeline cashmere coats in a range of lush colors, turtlenecks in delicate Chantilly lace, and his Oprah Winfrey–approved pima cotton T-shirts (Winfrey once ordered three dozen, then invited Lippes onto her show to talk fashion). Last Friday was opening day, and the first sale was a camel double-faced cashmere coat, a pair of trillium earrings, and one of the Oprah-approved tees. “I loved it,” Lippes said. “It mixed one of our standby styles with our new collection of jewelry, and of course, the T-shirt!”
The designer’s studio is a few blocks away on lower Broadway, so he anticipates taking clients to Sant Ambroeus for lunch then ambling over to the shop. “I wanted to make it a really fun place to come and explore and sit down.” There’s a chair upholstered in a fabric upcycled from his spring 2018 collection that he designed and made for that purpose in one sunny corner. Until he sells it.
Adam Lippes is located at Brookfield Place Mall, 230 Vesey Street, New York, NY.
